Introduction to Medical Silicone

Oct 07, 2021

Medical silicone is a biological material that is widely used in cosmetic surgery. It has many forms, such as: liquid silicone oil, jelly-like silicone, foamed silicone sponge, and elastic solid silicone rubber. Solid silicone rubber is mostly used.

Features

Silicone rubber has good biocompatibility, no irritation to human tissues, no toxicity, no allergic reactions, and minimal rejection of the body; it has good physical and chemical properties and can maintain its original properties during contact with body fluids and tissues. Elasticity and softness, will not be degraded, is a fairly stable inert material. It can withstand high temperature and can be sterilized. It is easy to process and shape, easy to process and engrave shape, and easy to use.

Classification use

Silicone rubber can be divided into two types: thermally vulcanized silicone rubber and room temperature vulcanized silicone rubber.

Thermally vulcanized silicone rubber

It can be made into products of different hardness, which is the most commonly used one in clinical practice, and can be carved into the shape in advance. Such as: nasal prosthesis, artificial mandible, skull patch, breast prosthesis, auricle or stent mandibular facial prosthesis materials, artificial joints, artificial testicles, etc.

Room temperature vulcanized silicone rubber

The vulcanization process is completed by the action of the catalyst for the silicone oil unit at room temperature, and the required part is injected into the required part before it is still liquid and not hardened, and the local defect shape is filled and shaped. However, this type of usage has many complications and has been discontinued.
